Your Mass is NOT From the Higgs Boson

06:50
The Higgs Boson is awesome but it's NOT responsible for most of your mass! Thanks to audible.com for supporting this episode: http://bit.ly/ZJ5Q6z The Higgs mechanism is meant to account for the mass of everything, right? Well no, only the fundamental particles, which means that electrons derive their mass entirely from the Higgs interaction but protons and neutrons, made of quarks, do not. In fact the quark masses are so small that they only make up about 1% of the mass of the proton (and a similar fraction of the neutron). The rest of the mass comes from the energy in the gluon field. Gluons are massless, but there is so much energy in the field that by E=mc^2 there is a significant amount of mass there. This is where most of your mass comes from and the mass of virtually everything around you. Thanks to Professor Derek Leinweber for his great images, animations and explanations. Label Channel: http://youtube.com/tasty Project Inspired By: Two different friends that let me study the propane torches they made from designs found on the internet. After experimenting independently, I developed the two designs into this hybrid. Project History & More Info: A year after I made my charcoal foundry (http://bit.ly/PopCanMelting), a friend named Chris came by to visit, and to show me a foundry he'd made out of a propane tank, and refractory cement. His was more expensive to construct, but was made to last longer, and he powered it with propane instead of charcoal. He said the burner plans he followed were the common "Ron Reil" design, which for some reason I had never heard of. I bought the plumbing parts from Home Depot with intentions to build the torch, but they just sat on my worktable for months as I worked on developing other projects first. After a considerable amount of time, a young man named Shadrick came to my house and noticed the plumbing parts on my table and asked if I was making a propane burner. To my surprise, he'd made a propane foundry himself and had been using it to forge steel, melt aluminum, and make knives for over a year. His assembly was completely different from the one Chris had, and since I really didn't have much idea of how propane burners worked at all, I was interested in reverse engineering the science behind it. I realized that the purpose of the burner was to mix certain amounts of fuel and air to achieve the hottest temperature possible, and the cleanest burn. I played with different lengths of tubing, and stumbled on the realization that by controlling the air-flow through the intake port, I could adjust the flame completely, and use any length of pipe I wanted. I also noticed that without a nozzle on the end, the burner wouldn't work. I quickly developed some prototypes for an air regulator design I made from the lid of a tuna can, and it worked perfectly! My final design was a hybrid of the two systems, with most of the plumbing parts based around the Ron Reil assembly, and the rest based on the connections I saw on Shad's system.

I changed a lot of my preconceptions, specifically I thought: 1. That the Earth's magnetic field was a passive thing - it shouldn't need a continuous input of energy to maintain itself (that seemed reasonable to me because the magnetic field has been around for a long time and it seems mostly stable). But as it turns out, the Earth is a giant electromagnet, and so of course those currents dissipate their energy as they encounter resistance in the liquid metal through which they flow. So the energy to continuously create these currents comes from the kinetic energy of the liquid metal flows in the Earth's outer core. 2. If it's convection, I'm thinking hot things rising, cooler things falling. But apparently the main effect driving convection is the compositional differences at the boundary with the Earth's inner core. This is because of the differential freezing at the boundary. Things like iron freeze into the inner core, while elements like sulfur do not. Hence the pockets of lighter material which then rise outwards. 3. I didn't get why the fluid motion was necessary for the generation of the magnetic field. I mean if it's a conducting liquid, it can conduct currents whether it moves or not. But the key is that the liquid metal can 'trap' magnetic fields. I imagine this like how iron channels magnetic fields. Then once these fields are channeled, they can be pulled and stretched, making more magnetic field. 4. Fluids operate very differently in rotating frames of reference. This is something I didn't intuitively grasp. But, as fluids move from the inner core outwards, those particles are moving much more slowly in the direction of rotation than the matter that has been there for a long time, which means the convection currents get deflected and form helices. Don't make these mistakes in English!

06:16
Can you find the mistakes? "I am student", "I am agree", "Yesterday, I'm go downtown", "He no have money", "I want to meet the downtown". If you don't know, this is the lesson for you! These are mistakes made by students of all levels, so watch this video and learn to avoid these common errors. Take the quiz here: http://www.engvid.com/dont-make-these-mistakes/ And don't forget to check out our other video on 5 common English learner mistakes: http://www.engvid.com/5-common-mistakes/ TRANSCRIPT Hey, everyone. I'm Alex. Thanks for clicking, and welcome to this lesson on five more common English learner mistakes. So if you have watched my other video on five common English learner mistakes, this is a follow up to give you five more. So let's not waste time and get right to it. Here we go with No. 1. So this first mistake is common because in many languages, when you discuss jobs or your station in life, you don't use articles even if you come from a country where there are articles in the language. So for example, "I am student." "He is engineer." If I ask you, "What do you do", you need to use an article because "student" is countable; it's singular; and "engineer' is countable and it's singular. So you have to say, "I am a student." "He is an engineer." Now, let's move on to No. 2. Okay. Here, we have two sentences on the board. We have, "I am agree." "Are you agree?" So in this situation, "agree" is a verb. We don't say, "I am agree." You can just say, "I agree." If it's negative, "I don't agree" or, "I disagree." And the question is not, "Are you agree?" It's, "Do you agree?" Now, if you are set on wanting to say "I am" and use "agree" in some way, you would have to say, "I am in agreement." This is very formal, but it is possible. Otherwise, you say, "I agree" or, "I disagree" and, "Do you agree?" Now, let's move on to No. 3. This next mistake is about the use of the past tense. For new English speakers, because they can't form the past tense, sometimes they use the verb "to be" with the verb. So I have heard, "I'm go downtown yesterday." Or, "He was see his cousin." If you are speaking in the past, make sure you simply use the past simple verb. In this situation, we don't say "I'm go". The past of "go" is "went". "I went downtown." We don't say "he was see". The past of "see" is "saw". So this is about using the past simple form of the verb to speak about the past. Never say "I'm go", "I'm do", "I'm make". "I saw"; "I made"; "I did"; "I played". Okay? Now, let's move on to No. 4. Now, this mistake is about using negatives. In many languages, whether they're European or Latin, Spanish, I hear this frequently. So you might hear, "He no have money" or, "They no like chocolate." So if you are making a sentence in the sent simple, and you want to make it negative, you have to use "doesn't" and "don't". So not "he no have" but, "He doesn't have." Okay? Not "they no like chocolate" but, "They don't like chocolate." So make sure you learn how to make negative sentences. "He doesn't"; "I don't"; "we don't"; "they don't"; not "he no", "she no", "I no". All right? Now, let's move on to No. 5. Finally, here we have a word choice error. And this is because maybe speakers translate from their own language, and many languages, you can use the verbs "meet" or "know" to talk about going to places and getting to know cities and towns, for example. So, "I want to meet the city" or, "Yesterday, I knew downtown." Now, in English, we don't really use the verbs "know" and "meet" to talk about getting to know a place. You can use the verbs "explore" or "get to know" or "visit". So you can say, you know, "I want to explore the city." I want to go around the city." "Yesterday, I knew downtown" -- "Yesterday, I traveled around downtown." And you can also use terms like "get to know" a place. You can visit a place. You can explore a place. Okay? But you can't meet a park. You can meet a person, but you can't meet a place. Now, let's review all five of these mistakes one more time. All right. So to review, No. 1, "I am a student." If you want to talk about your status in life. Are you a student? An engineer? Are you a teacher? Etc. you need to use an article to talk about jobs, professions, talk about your station in life. No. 2, "I agree, not "I am agree"." Do you agree?" Not "are you agree?" No. 3, "I went downtown." "I saw my cousin." So remember, memorize those past tense verbs. Not "I was go" or "I am go". "I went"; "I saw"; "I did". All right?

Can Silence Actually Drive You Crazy?

10:33
*Watch with headphones on! Is 45 minutes really the longest anyone can stay in a perfectly silent, pitch-black room? Support Veritasium on Patreon http://bit.ly/VePatreon Check out Audible: http://bit.ly/AudibleVe Want to watch the whole hour of silence? http://youtu.be/jr1UMFC9DV0 Many stories have circulated claiming the longest anyone has stayed in an ultra-quiet anechoic chamber is 45 minutes, the reason being any longer would drive you insane. To me this sounded like unsubstantiated rubbish, like the claim the Great Wall is the only manmade structure visible from space. So I put my own psyche on the line, subjecting myself to over an hour of the most intense quiet on Earth. No, this was not THE quietest room on Earth (-9dB) but it is one of the quietest, and the truth is once you put a person inside, they are by far the loudest thing in there so the sound rating of the room is irrelevant. I was not surprised to find that I could stay in there for as long as I liked and feel perfectly fine. What was surprising is that my heartbeat was audible. You can hear it on the sound recording. Now I wasn't consciously aware of the sound of my heart while in the room, but I was more aware of the feeling of it beating. Huge thank you to everyone at BYU: Duane Merrell, Spencer Perry, Cameron Vongsawad, Jazz Myers, Ann Clawson, and Robert Willes.
